Guru versus Gooroo

By Suzy Molloy

“Gurus” is a specific term which seems to have been unscrupulously adopted by those working in the ’snake oil’ side of internet marketing.

At the same time I am aware that not all who wear the label of gurus are the same. By definition of the word, a “guru” could also be labelled a mentor, a leader, an expert and a teacher. Whilst many true gurus may never refer to themselves as such preferring to present themselves as mentors. Or guides who are available to answer your questions, be honest and upfront. I found those terms to be much more palatable to me.

My aversion to the term guru was so much been about those offering such services, but the unscrupulous tactics which people who use that term often use. A legitimate claim to a certain level of expertise can be done without the elitist and often unfounded claims made by those in the 'snake oil' group, and definitely without the sleaze.

But a snake oil salesman is a snake oil salesman to anyone and this phenomenon is not just reserved to the internet marketing arena. Tales of dodgy shenanigans and highly questionable ethics exist outside of just those who falsely claim to be “gurus”.

The tactics these bottom-feeding, opportunists use is unprofessional marketing, and as such I am now going to be distinguishing them with the term “gooroos”. I am changing so that I can give credit to those who truly have been gurus; the mentors, leaders and teachers in my life whose contribution I was previously not acknowledging and honouring.

Thank you for sharing and bring to light the Gooroo definition, Suzy. We all need some true mentering and it's unfortunate that we have to sift through the Gooroo's to get to the Guru's.
Keep up the good work.
Best wishes.

Thank you for your comments Frederick.
The internet was originally founded through open source and collaboration. It's a shame that the bad apples can sour that experience, but hopefully they won't deter people from continuing their search for the gems.

I was down at Guru (spell Giru) and I looked under every stone I saw but I didn't find a single guru or gooroo

LOL Reg, your comments brings to mind the Bega ad which says that Cardigan isn't famous for cardigans, etc.
I don't think that Giru was ever meant to be synonymous with gurus or gooroos. I do think that if gooroos took to hanging out under rocks we would find it far easier to distinguish them from the gurus.
